Our History

The current sawmill was created during the 1970s when Surrey County Council and the Basingstoke Canal Authority began a project to repair parts of the Basingstoke Canal and it was decided to use locally sourced timber.  The sawmill was established in Norbury Park, which Surrey County Council own, to process timber from reserves within the estate.

Once the Basingstoke Canal project was completed, the sawmill diversified and started making countryside furniture (notice boards, signposts, gates and benches) predominantly for installation in Surrey County Council's own properties and estates. Later, the sawmill sold its products to other Local Authorities and countryside organisations.  We also extended our product range to include items suitable for small parks and domestic gardens.

In 2002, Surrey County Council signed a long term contract with Surrey Wildlife Trust (SWT) to take over the management of its countryside estate, which included Norbury Park Sawmill.  The sawmill business was rebranded Norbury Park Wood Products (NPWP) and considerable investment was made in equipment and infrastructure, as well as a revised focus on production and marketing. At the same time, NPWP launched new products, some based on kiln dried oak, available from the newly commissioned kiln.

Since then, we have re-focused on producing a range of high quality countryside and garden furniture, still using traditional materials and methods, with an increased emphasis on customer requirements and product quality.

Today we pride ourselves on our comprehensive, ethically produced range of products for both the larger enterprise as well as those for domestic use.  From lecterns and noticeboards for the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), to tree crates to protect the trees from the deer in Richmond Park; information Boards and bench seating for the National Trust; routed signage and picnic tables for country parks; memorial benches to pay tribute to a loved one; as well as house signs and gates for the private property, every single item we make to order, to the highest quality by genuine craftsmen who put their heart and soul into every piece we produce.
